Spawn #1

About this issue

Spawn #21 plunges you back into the shadowy streets of New York City with Image Comics' most infamous antihero. Al Simmons, a murdered assassin who made a pact with the devil, now walks the earth as Spawn, a scarred, cloaked soldier of Hell with a living chain-wrapped costume and a conscience he cannot silence. In this chapter, titled "The Hunt", the story follows two very different lives in the city's hidden back streets: the brooding, ruler-like figure who haunts the alleyways, and a homeless man who owes him a deep debt of gratitude. Sharp, sardonic dialogue meets dark, atmospheric artwork, with moonlit skylines, torn capes and a grotesque, stitched-up face that makes this series unforgettable. This 1994 issue, with a cover credited to Todd McFarlane, captures the gritty, hyper-detailed style that made Spawn a defining title of 1990s comics. It mixes street-level grit with supernatural horror, black humour and the sense that something terrible is closing in. Whether you are a long-time collector filling gaps in your run or a newcomer curious about one of the best-known dark superheroes of the era, this issue delivers moody storytelling and bold visuals.
