"Noel" #39

About this issue

It's Christmas Eve in Harlem, and a snowstorm is burying the grimy streets of New York. Behind the windows of the city's crowded buildings, families gather to celebrate – some close, some broken, all hoping for a little festive warmth. But Spawn, the hellspawned anti-hero of Todd McFarlane's blockbuster series, has no peace to give. In this special holiday issue, "Noel", Spawn appears on the cover in a blood-spattered twist on Santa Claus, with a heavy sack at his side and spiked, chained gauntlets at the ready. Adrift and without a clear target after the revelations of the previous issues, he is a danger to anyone who crosses his path. Written by Todd McFarlane and drawn by Greg Capullo with McFarlane's inks, this 1995 issue delivers the dark, gritty atmosphere and bold, detailed artwork that made Spawn one of Image Comics' defining titles of the 1990s. Steve Oliff's rich colours bring the cold, snowy night and the cosy kitchen scenes to life, creating a chilling contrast. A must-read for Spawn collectors and fans of dark superhero horror.
