Appearances #32

About this issue

Spawn #32, "Appearances", brings Todd McFarlane's dark antihero back to the shadowed streets of New York City in this June 1995 issue from Image Comics. With story by Todd McFarlane and art by Greg Capullo and McFarlane himself, it delivers the brooding atmosphere, razor-edged linework and blood-red capes that made Spawn one of the defining comics of the 1990s. The issue opens high above Manhattan, where a gleaming tower of steel and glass seems to touch the heavens. Behind its polished facade, a massive reorganization is under way, and the cold language of corporate power hides ambitions that are anything but clean. Appearances, as the title suggests, can be deceiving. The striking cover shows Spawn silhouetted against a blazing orange sunset, his tattered cape and heavy chains whipping through the air. Inside, rich colors by Steve Oliff and Olyoptics give every page a fiery, moody glow, while Tom Orzechowski's lettering keeps the narration sharp and cinematic. Whether you are a long-time fan filling the gaps in your Spawn run or a newcomer curious about the 1990s Image Comics boom, this issue is a vivid piece of dark superhero storytelling.
