The Homecoming #31

About this issue

Spawn #31 returns to the dark streets of New York in "The Homecoming", a gritty issue from Image Comics' flagship series, published in May 1995. Al Simmons, the damned soldier turned reluctant Hellspawn, rides the rails in solitude, his living costume whispering to him that home is near. The issue opens in near-total darkness. Clattering wheels set the rhythm while a lone figure sits in the black of a boxcar, haunted by fear and rejection. Around him, a crowd of homeless travellers waits for the end of a long journey. When the train finally slows into the station, a city that once shunned him begins to feel like a haven. The cover pairs Greg Capullo's dynamic artwork with Todd McFarlane's signature style: spiked armour, dripping green ooze and swirling purple shadows. Inside, moody narration boxes, stark black panels and blood-red skies under the towers of the New York skyline set the tone for a story about identity, belonging and the monster inside. If you love 1990s superhero horror, dark urban atmosphere and the Spawn mythos, this issue is a must for your collection.
