Angela #9

About this issue

Spawn #9 is one of the most talked-about issues of Image Comics' early years: the debut of Angela, a fierce warrior from beyond the Realms, brought to life by writer Neil Gaiman and artist Todd McFarlane. After the Hellspawn Al Simmons is left battered on the cover's battlefield of broken armor and a torn crimson cape, a new and deadly figure strides in. Angela, armed with an ornate polearm and a gleaming arsenal, hunts Hellspawn, and she is not here to talk. Meanwhile, a terrified woman stumbles through a dark forest, crying out for anyone to save her, while a page from a Hellspawn field manual coldly explains the rules of the endless war between Heaven and Hell. This issue mixes dark fantasy, superhero action and grim mythology in McFarlane's dynamic, richly detailed style, with Gaiman's sharp storytelling adding a new layer to the Spawn universe. It is an essential read for fans of the series, collectors of 1990s comics, and anyone curious about the origins of one of the era's most iconic characters.
