Spawn #75: Sacred Ground #75

About this issue

Spawn, the hellspawn antihero of Todd McFarlane's long-running Image Comics series, awakens in a place he never expected: a lush, sunlit paradise far from the darkness of Hell and the grime of the city alleys. In Spawn #75, "Sacred Ground", the story opens with a haunting, dreamlike sequence of rebirth. Spawn emerges from a womb of darkness into a world of green forests, birdsong and living creatures. Yet something is deeply wrong: the Sigil that binds him to Malebolgia is dead, and his necroplasmic powers are gone. What does this strange calm mean for a soldier of Hell? Greg Capullo's richly detailed, atmospheric artwork contrasts Spawn's blood-red cape and chains with a vivid natural landscape, creating a striking mix of dark fantasy, supernatural horror and quiet, almost spiritual reflection. The cover, a kneeling, battered figure framed by the glowing Spawn sigil, is among the most memorable images of the era. Ideal for fans of 1990s Image Comics, dark superhero stories and gothic fantasy, and a great jumping-in point for readers curious about the tortured soul behind the mask.
