Spawn #87: Folklore #87

About this issue

New York is a city built on ghosts, and one of them wears a blood-red cloak and chains. In Spawn #87, "Folklore," the legend of the city's cloaked urban avenger takes centre stage as the streets whisper about a spectral figure rising from the squalid depths of the gutters. Written by Brian Holguin with plot by Holguin and Todd McFarlane, this issue pairs the moody, atmospheric storytelling of the series with the dynamic pencils of Greg Capullo and the sharp inks of Danny Miki. Dark city skylines, haunted newsprint collages and a wry, world-weary narration set the tone for a chapter that looks at how urban myths are born and why a city hungry for heroes needs them. Following the events of the previous issue, in which Spawn turns away from being a pawn in someone else's game, this instalment explores the aftermath through the lens of street-level legend, with the infamous "Rat City" and "Spawn Alley" as its backdrop. A great pick for fans of Image Comics' flagship dark superhero series, late-1990s comic art and gritty supernatural noir. Collectors who want to follow the Spawn saga issue by issue will find this a stylish entry in the long-running run. Start reading online instantly in your browser, with no download required.
