Spawn #79: Exterminator #79

About this issue

New York City, the end of the millennium. It never stops raining, and somewhere in the faceless crowds a killer is stalking the homeless. The press has already given him a name: the Exterminator. Spawn #79 opens with a dark, rain-soaked narration that treats the city as a stage and the murders as a grand opera written in blood. This issue of Todd McFarlane's long-running Spawn series is part of the "Exterminator" storyline. Hellspawn Al Simmons haunts the shadows of Manhattan, and a cast of mortals is drawn into the unfolding drama: cops, outcasts, and the people society forgets. Moody, detailed art, heavy black inks and lurid colour give each page the feel of a gritty urban nightmare. If you enjoy dark superhero stories, crime noir and supernatural horror, this late-1990s Image Comics issue is an atmospheric read. It works as a chapter for collectors and as a taste of the Spawn universe's grim side, with a strong voice and cinematic page design.
