Misery

About this book

Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who has just finished the manuscript he believes is his best work. Driving through a Colorado blizzard, he crashes his car and wakes in agonizing pain, his legs shattered, in the care of a stranger who says she is his number one fan. Annie Wilkes is a former nurse who has rescued him from the wreckage and taken him to her remote, snowbound farmhouse. She adores the Misery novels that made him famous, and she is not at all pleased with how he has treated her favourite heroine. No roads are open, no one knows where he is, and his kind rescuer has very particular ideas about what he should write next. Misery by Stephen King is a masterclass in claustrophobic suspense: two characters, one house, and a battle of wills that tightens with every chapter. It is a gripping psychological horror novel that also explores obsession, addiction and the strange bond between a writer and his readers. Annie Wilkes remains one of the most unforgettable villains in modern fiction. If you love tense, character-driven thrillers that get under your skin and refuse to let go, this is essential reading.
