33-The Lair of the Ice Worm

About this book

High in the Eiglophian Mountains, where the passes thaw only with the first breath of spring, a lone Cimmerian rider approaches the notorious Snow Devil Glacier, also known as the River of Death Ice. Whole parties are said to have vanished there, and even Conan's own tribesmen speak of it in whispers. The young Conan scorns such superstition. Weary of village life and still haunted by his brush with the frost giant's daughter, he longs for the warm southern kingdoms, with their wine, silks and adventure. Then a scream rings out across the ice. A girl in white furs is surrounded by a pack of shaggy, brutish mountain men, and Conan does what he does best: he charges. This tale of sword-and-sorcery adventure belongs to the Conan saga, the legendary barbarian hero created by Robert E. Howard. It is told here by L. Sprague de Camp in a fast-moving style full of icy landscapes, savage combat and creeping dread. Is the glacier merely dangerous, or does something far older and more evil wait beneath its frozen surface? Fans of classic heroic fantasy, Hyperborean legends and swashbuckling action will find plenty to enjoy in this short story, which is number 33 in the Conan chronology.
