Pretty Hate Machine #5

About this issue

The blood-soaked horror-thriller Pretty Hate Machine keeps tightening its grip in issue #5, from writers Ryan O'Nan and Tim Seeley and artist Hank La Marca. A killer with blades for hands stalks the corridors of a hospital, and the cover shows him looming over a terrified young man in a wheelchair. Outside, the fallout spreads across a quiet neighborhood. Two ambulances arrive within minutes of each other, a stabbing victim turns out to be tied to a recent incident, and a neighbor has attempted to harm a minor. A detective starts to suspect that someone is deliberately targeting one family. At the bedside of the injured, grief and guilt collide. Painful questions are asked about family, loyalty and the sins of a father. Meanwhile, a young man is forced to face the truth about the dark legacy he was born into. La Marca's gritty linework and Roman Stevens' neon-drenched colors give every page a nightmarish, rain-slicked energy. Dave Sharpe's lettering adds punch to the sharp, profane dialogue. The result mixes slasher-style horror with a tense crime investigation and a troubled family drama. This mature-readers issue is best read after the earlier chapters of the series.
