Unfinished Tales

About this book

Step beyond The Lord of the Rings and explore the hidden corners of Middle-earth in Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, a rich collection of narratives, fragments and essays by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited and introduced by his son Christopher Tolkien. The stories range from the Elder Days to the end of the War of the Ring. Watch the sea-god Ulmo rise from the waves before Tuor on the coast of Beleriand. Hear Gandalf's own lively account of how he came to send the Dwarves to the celebrated party at Bag-End. Discover the only story that survives from the long ages of Númenor before its downfall. The book also sheds light on subjects that readers have long wondered about: the Five Wizards, the Palantíri, the legend of Amroth, and the exact military organisation of the Riders of Rohan. Christopher Tolkien has also redrawn the map for The Lord of the Rings on a larger scale and reproduced the only map of Númenor that his father ever made. This is a book for those who have not yet fully explored Middle-earth, its languages, its legends, its politics and its kings. Each tale is introduced with careful editorial commentary that shows how the legendarium grew and changed over time.
