The Silmarillion

About this book

Long before the Fellowship set out from Rivendell, there was the Music of the Ainur, the Silmarils, and the First Dark Lord. The Silmarillion is J.R.R. Tolkien's great mythology of the Elder Days, the legendary First Age of Middle-earth, edited and shaped into a single narrative by his son Christopher Tolkien. The book opens with the creation of the world in the Ainulindalë and the Valaquenta, then moves into the Quenta Silmarillion: the awakening of the Elves, the rise of Morgoth, and the long war of the High Elves to recover the Silmarils, the jewels that hold the light of the Two Trees. Along the way come the tales of Beren and Lúthien, Túrin Turambar, and the fall of Gondolin, set in a world of kingdoms, oaths and grand tragedy. The volume also includes the Akallabêth, the story of the downfall of Númenor, and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, which links the ancient legends to The Lord of the Rings. This edition features Christopher Tolkien's foreword, his preface to the second edition, and Tolkien's 1951 letter to Milton Waldman explaining his vision. An index of names, a note on pronunciation, genealogical material and maps are listed in the contents. Ideal for fans of epic fantasy and anyone who wants to explore the roots of Middle-earth.
