48-Hawks Over Shem

About this book

Conan the Cimmerian turns his back on the black countries and strides north across the deserts of Stygia into the sun-scorched meadowlands of Shem. His fearsome reputation soon wins him a place in the army of King Sumuabi of Akkharia, one of the southern Shemitish city-states, but treachery strikes swiftly. An ambush set by the scheming Othbaal, cousin of the mad King Akhirom of Pelishtia, wipes out the Akkharian forces, and only Conan survives. Bent on vengeance, the barbarian tracks the renegade to Asgalun, the shadowy Pelishti capital, a city of crumbling splendor, labyrinthine alleys and the whims of a deranged king. There, in the dark river quarter, steel flashes almost at once, and a chance alliance with a mysterious Hyrkanian archer draws him into a web of intrigue, spies and assassins. This tale continues the chronological adventures of Conan, the legendary hero of sword-and-sorcery fiction, with fast, brutal action, exotic cities and ruthless rogues on every side. Fans of Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age, and readers who love classic heroic fantasy filled with swordplay and desert intrigue, will find plenty to enjoy in this short novel of roughly 12,000 words.
